If you have healthy but stained or discolored teeth, an easy and highly effective solution is professional teeth whitening, also known as bleaching. Please note that if you have pitting or deep staining, you might need another solution such as veneers. For most people with stained, healthy teeth, though, it is a simple matter of deciding between in-office and at-home whitening.

In-Office Teeth Whitening: In-office teeth whitening can usually be completed in just one visit. First, we will use a rubber shield or protective gel to guard the sensitive gum tissue. Next, we will apply a powerful, carbamide peroxide-containing whitening agent directly to your teeth. We will then use an LED light to increase the bleaching power.
At-Home Bleaching: If you would rather whiten your teeth at home at night, just come by our office for dental impressions, which we will use to craft a custom-fitted mouth tray. All you need to do is add a whitening gel containing carbamide peroxide to the tray and insert into your mouth each night. Your dentist will instruct you on how long to wear the tray each night (typically between 2 and 8 hours), and how many nights total to wear it (up to 4 weeks, depending on the current shade and desired shade).
Professional teeth whitening lasts a long time, but you can help extend the time between appointments by brushing and flossing regularly, rinsing your mouth after consuming any stain-causing foods or beverages, and having a professional cleaning twice per year. You can also use an at-home whitening kit when your teeth first start to appear duller, but keep in mind that it is not nearly as powerful as professional whitening.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening
Will my dental insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?
Not likely. Most dental insurance companies view teeth whitening procedures as electives and will not cover the cost. Keep in mind that because every insurance policy is different, you will want to check your benefits coverage just in case.
How often will I need to repeat in-office whitening?
The time between in-office whitening will vary depending on your level of care. You may need to repeat treatment every year or every couple of years. The better your overall hygiene, the longer your teeth will remain white.
How quickly can I see the results of professional teeth whitening?
For in-office professional teeth whitening, you should see results almost instantly. At-home treatments take a bit longer.
Will professional teeth whitening turn my yellow teeth white again?
Yes. Professional teeth whitening can address yellow teeth and leave your teeth shades lighter. As we mentioned above, depending on the depth of your staining, we will discuss whether in-office and at-home treatment will yield the greatest results.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
No, teeth whitening treatment does not hurt. Some patients do experience sensitivity following the procedure. But this is temporary and should subside within a day or two. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help.
Is teeth whitening harmful to your teeth?
